A chianca does not start from a calibrated slab. It is cut from the scorza layer, worked by hand and brushed, and every piece comes out slightly different in thickness, with the tool marks still readable on the face. The irregularity is the reason people choose it.
Masseria courtyards and porticoes, entrance halls, masonry kitchens, walkways. Its average thickness is greater than that of the catalogue slabs, so it also takes light vehicle traffic. Borgo Montetorto and Masseria Potenti are laid this way.
The warm beige darkens a little along the traffic lines, and that is its best result: a chianca is meant to age in plain sight. The mixed-size courses have to be decided before laying, because the joint is part of the design and cannot be fixed later.
